Take to the stars and become a living legend in Star Wars: Outer Rim, a game of bounty hunters, mercenaries, and smugglers for 1-4 players! In Outer Rim, you take on the role of an underworld denizen, setting out to make your mark on the galaxy. You'll travel the outer rim in your personal ship, hire legendary Star Wars characters to join your crew, and try to become the most famous (or infamous) outlaw in the galaxy! But it won't be easy since the warring factions of the galaxy roam the outer rim, hunting down the scum that have proven to be a thorn in their side, and other scoundrels looking to make their mark see you as the perfect target to bring down to bolster their own reputation. Do you have what it takes to survive in the outer rim and become a living legend? In more detail, a game of Outer Rim takes place over a series of turns that sees players taking dangerous jobs, tracking down bounties, upgrading their ship, and more, all in service of gaining more and more fame. Regardless of the path you take to get there, your goal is to gain ten fame, which can come from a variety of sources, such as completing your character's personal goal, collecting on bounties and jobs, delivering illegal cargo, taking down patrols from the various factions struggling over the galaxy, and enjoying the finer things in life by purchasing luxury items with your hard-earned credits. While the path to victory may be different for scoundrels finding their way in the Outer Rim, everyone starts from the bottom with a simple starship. Your player board not only tracks your fame progress, but also contains slots for your ship, your character card, gear, reputation, modifications, jobs, and bounties.
Firefly: The Game was a lot of fun for fans of space cowboys taking sketchy jobs whilst avoiding an all-powerful government. Reimplementing the basic mechanics for a Star Wars game then isn't much of a stretch. However, whereas Firefly was pretty much a sandbox game, here Star Wars Outer Rim streamlines the rules and brings the play-time down to a more-manageable 2 hours (Firefly could easily double that). Unlike the beloved, but cult, series, Star Wars holds a wider appeal and allows players to take on the roles of some of the more iconic characters (and a few more that might only be familiar to hardcore fans). At the heart of it, this is a pick-up and deliver game, but the strong theme bring the game to life, allowing players to take on the famous Kessel Run, trade your basic ship in for the famous Millennium Falcon or hunt down bounties on the likes of Greedo, Chewbacca and others. The amount of luck can drag the appeal down somewhat. Illegal jobs require a dice roll to pass and most jobs require skill checks which sometimes might not go your way if you're having a bad run of dice rolling. There are ways to mitigate such things by hiring certain crew or buying gear, but it can dampen the joy in an otherwise fun ride. The expansions adds some much needed player interaction, allowing ones to go after hired crew as bounties, as well as doing other players "favours" which they can cash in when they most need it. Missions add a bit more story to the game and extra cards bring a bit more variety to the selection which can become repetitive if you play it enough. Apart from 1 or 2 OP cards/characters (looking at you Dr Aphra), the game is pretty even and all bets are off as players race to get those last few Fame points to secure the win.
